The Bhootni Movie Review: Neither scared nor made you laugh – just became the ghost of time!

Hello brothers! Ah ha ha ha what a movie I have just seen! No I mean… wow! The ‘Bhootni’ – hearing the name I thought it would be a horror comedy, but actually it turned out to be a tragic comedy of time and mind.

Release Date: 1 May 2025
Genre: Horror-Comedy
Director: Siddhant Sachdev
Writers: Siddhant Sachdev, Vankush Arora
Production House: Soham Rockstar Entertainment, Three Dimension Motion Pictures
Distributor: Zee Studios

Plot: Ghosts, love and a “virgin tree”

The story of the film revolves around a magical tree – the Virgin Tree. It is said that on Valentine’s Day, if you wish for true love here, it gets fulfilled. But that tree is haunted by a ghost – who is Mouni Roy. The ghost enters the college life, hostel drama and love story and then the story becomes ‘Bhootni’.

Sanjay Dutt is Baba – who is half ghost and half practical. But we felt pity for him more than we had expected from him.

A look at the cast:

  • Sanjay Dutt as Baba, a spiritual ghost.
  • Mouni Roy as the witch named Mohabbat.
  • Sunny Singh as Shantanu.
  • Palak Tiwari as Ananya, a college girl.
  • Nikunj Lotia (BeYouNick) as Sahil, who tries YouTube type comedy.
  • Asif Khan as a good comic relief.
  • Navneet Malik as the young Baba.

Review: What is the real Bhoot? Script, acting or VFX?

What do the critics say?

  • Hindustan Times: The film had possibilities, but it neither scares nor makes you laugh. Can be watched only once – that too when there is nothing else.
  • India Today: Neither the story works, nor the acting. It is just a failed attempt to become “Stree”.
  • Komoi: The attempt was good, but the feeling is missing. Mouni Roy worked wholeheartedly, but the script let her down.
  • Indian Express: 0 stars – yes, complete zero! No emotions, no proper use of budget and no sense.

Music and VFX: A little Honey Singh, more Confusion

There is a song – in Honey Singh style – in which an attempt has been made to connect “Bhoot” with “Chu…” and “Thand” with “L…”. That is, an overdose of double meaning, but the laughter is missing.

The VFX are of the quality of a 2005 serial. Ghosts fly in the sky, play antakshari. The CG looks so fake that it seems to have been edited in paint.

Major Downfalls of the Movie:

  • Lots of overacting – all the actors seem to have been picked from a drama troupe.
  • The script has no head or tail – even the witch is confused whether to scare or love.
  • The technical team is a dud – no tightness in editing, the background score makes you laugh instead of scaring.
  • Comic timing – Just fine till YouTube shorts, meaningless in the film.

One positive thing: Some users on IMDb described it as “light horror and family entertainment.” But those were probably just big-hearted people.

Final Verdict: To watch Bhootni or not?

If you have seen horror-comedies like Stree or Bhool Bhulaiyaa, then Bhootni can be a headache for you.
If you just want to pass time, are in a bad mood and have got a ticket for free – then also think about it.

Rating: 1 ⭐️ / 5
“Neither scared nor made me laugh… just put me to sleep. In horror-comedy, the ‘horror’ is missing and the ‘comedy’ is also dead.”
