So I have seen a biopic movie named Phule starring Patralekha and Pratik Gandhi. It is a Hindi movie, I mean a Bollywood movie and it has been released in theatres. So let’s talk about it. Look, the education we are getting today, the equality between men and women, the caste system has almost ended, India’s education system has become so strong, women’s sati has stopped, its foundation was laid through Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule in 1848. Savitribai Phule was the first lady teacher of India before independence and this is the real life story of her and her husband Jyotiba Phule’s struggle, which everyone should know about. You must have probably read about them in school books, but when you get a visual presentation more than books, you connect with it more. And this movie replicates it visually, but the thing is that Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai were the first influencers of that era who influenced everyone so much without social media that they changed the lives of millions of people but its making is such that you will feel that this movie would have been more popular if it had come directly on OTT.
However, considering the old-fashioned making, the visuals and presentation in it have been kept very simple. Everyone’s acting is good and the casting is also excellent but I had seen a Marathi movie based on this biopic a few months ago named Satyashodhak. In that, the actor Sandeep Kulkarni seemed more suited to Jyotiba’s role because he also had an aggression on his face. Here Pratik has acted in a very simple tone but anyway, when it comes to biopics, the intention of the film is seen more than the shortcomings, whether it is delivering the exact story or not which is a part of our history. It is not a mass masala movie which will attract more audience.
Only a few people came to my theatre and that is why I said that it would have been better if the movie was released on OTT. Otherwise it is a history based movie which you should definitely know about. So overall it is a good watch with your family. Nothing extraordinary that you will get any wow moment in it. Simple basic biopic drama and that is it. I give it three out of five stars.
